What specialist subjects does Whangarei Intermediate School offer?
WIS offers 5 different specialist subjects:
  • Food and Nutrition
  • Exploring Technology (hard materials, electronics, 3D design and printing)
  • Performance Arts (Dance)
  • Music
  • Visual Arts

How often does my child participate in specialist subjects?
Currently students participate in 5 cycles throughout the year.
Each cycle consists of 12 x 100 minute lessons in one specialist subject.
So over the course of a year your child would spend 20 hours in each specialist area.

What happens in each specialist area?
The specialist areas have a wide range of activities. See the individual pages for more detail.

Are there any extra costs for my child to do specialist subjects?
There are no extra costs for your child to participate in specialist subjects. That said we rely on school fees being paid to ensure well resourced specialist areas.

What equipment are students expected to have?
Students are expected to have a pencil and eraser (minimum) for every specialist area.
When students attend dance they are required to bring their school PE gear.

Which students will my child be in a class with?
Your child will be placed in a group with students from (usually) 3 classes to form a specialist group which stays together for the year as they go through each specialist subject.

What are the specialist subject class sizes?
The class sizes for specialist subjects is dependant on roll size, but somewhere between 16 - 22 students.
